New AAAA Research: Why Communication, Not Harder Work, Drives Workshop Loyalty

Independent automotive workshops are already delivering excellent mechanical work — but many are still losing customers they should be keeping. According to new research commissioned by the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA), the real issue isn’t workmanship. It’s a communication gap. Customers can’t always see, understand, or fully trust the value of the service they receive.

The Loyalty Numbers Are Clear

The Car Owners’ Needs & Workshop Delivery Alignment 2026 report reveals:

  • 60% of Australian car owners are highly committed — they always return to the same workshop.

  • 27% are regular customers who mostly stay loyal.

  • 13% are “undecided” shoppers who drift between providers.

That 13% represents a massive, recoverable opportunity for independent workshops. These customers aren’t lost forever — they’re simply waiting for a reason to commit.

Trust Beats Price

One of the most encouraging findings: trust and reputation matter far more than price. Seven in ten Australians say they’re willing to pay more for a workshop they trust. Even undecided customers need a significant discount before they’ll switch. The message is powerful: workshops don’t need to compete on price — they need to compete on transparency and confidence.

The Communications Gap Is Costing You Business

The research highlights several key friction points:

  • Unclear explanations at handover

  • Lack of proactive updates during service

  • No follow-up after the customer leaves

These aren’t minor details — they’re the moments that determine whether a customer becomes loyal or drifts away.

The report also notes a widespread misconception around warranty servicing. Many customers still believe they must return to a dealership to keep their warranty valid — even though independent workshops can legally and competently service vehicles under warranty.

Three Low-Cost Habits That Drive Real Retention

The AAAA research identifies three simple, high-impact behaviours that dramatically improve loyalty:

  1. Clear explanations at drop-off and pickup — what was done, why it mattered, and what needs attention now vs later.

  2. Proactive updates during the service (calls, texts, photos or videos).

  3. Post-service check-in within 48 hours to confirm satisfaction and answer questions.

These aren’t “nice-to-haves”. They are powerful commercial tools that turn one-off customers into lifelong advocates.

Closing The Gaps In Your Workshop

At AutoForce Digital, we work with hundreds of independent workshops across Australia and New Zealand. We’ve seen first-hand how focusing on better communication and transparency leads to stronger customer retention, more repeat business, and healthier workshops.

The excellent work is already happening in your bays. The opportunity lies in making that work more visible and trustworthy to your customers.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to work harder, invest in expensive new equipment, or completely change your operation. You simply need to close the communication gap and let your quality speak more clearly. The AAAA research confirms what many forward-thinking workshops are discovering: better communication drives better loyalty — and better long-term results for your business.
